Jerry Wong won the 6th event of the 2024 PGT Mixed Games Series in Las Vegas.

The sixth event of the 2024 PGT Mixed Games Series saw Jerry Wong capture the title and Max Hoffman once again go close as he ended his second consecutive event in the runner-up position. Having come close to the title in Event #5 against John Racener, Hoffman once again played bridesmaid as Wong starred in Triple Draw Mix, taking home the $164,500 top prize.

Yoon Bubbles as Lake Ladders

A total of 47 entrants meant seven players would be paid and it was Wong who took out the ‘Bubble Boy’ in the event, Brian Yoon. Playing a hand of Badugi, Yoon lost his way and couldn’t make his final draw count, missing the money places as Wong piled up a stack of 3.15 million chips.

The final table was led by Wong, with Scott Lake his nearest challenger on 1.04 million in second spot on the leaderboard. Everyone else had under 25% of Wong’s stack size, with Hal Rotholz (750,000), the aforementioned Hoffman (715,000), John Hennigan (615,000), Philip Sternheimer (500,000) and short-stacked Felipe Ramos, with 280,000 chips.

British-based Philip Sternheimer lost out in seventh place for $18,800 when his last chips were lost to Lake in 2-7 Triple Draw and his exit was followed by that of Hal Rotholz for $28,200 in sixth. Rotholz lost in Ace-to-5 Triple Draw when Hennigan stood pat on the final street, turning over a 6-5-4-3-2 to beat Rotholz’ A-T-7-5-3, sending his fellow American to the rail.

Hennigan Can’t Hero the Win

With five players remaining, it was the Brazilian poker legend Felipe Ramos who cashed out next, losing in fifth place for $37,600. Also departing after a hand of Ace-to-5 Triple Draw, Ramos squeezed an ace for A-A-6-3-2, which was unable to beat Scott Lake’s A-6-5-3-2. The brilliant Brazilian was out and just four remained as the first day of action closed, Wong well in charge with over double his closest challenger’s chips.

John Hennigan left the action in fourth place and in 2-7, he was taken out by the eventual winner Wong. That pot was crucial for Wong, as it bumped him up to around 5.5 million chips, with Max Hoffman (925,000) and Scott Lake (575,000) lagging far behind as three-handed play began. Hennigan’s result was good enough to guarantee that he would end the event top of the overall Championship leaderboard, but the lead was also assured to be a slim one.

Lake left in third place, busting to the champion in waiting for a score of $68,150. After he stood pat with 9-6-5-3-2, Wong drew one card and showed 7-6-4-3-2. That gave him over 5.1 million, with Hoffman having recovered a little to 1.9 million chips.

Wong Gets it Right as Poker Brat Scrapes into Event #7 Finale

Heads-up, Wong wasted no time in pressing home his chip advantage. Winning the first meaningful hand of heads-up, Wong reduced Hoffman to scraps in a hand of Badugi when he tabled a ten smooth at the end, with Hoffman mucking quickly. In Ace-to-5, Wong tabled A-8-6-3-2 after standing pat on the final street. Hoffman held A-6-5-3 so drew to one with a chance of doubling up, but he drew a queen and that meant he was the runner-up for a score of $103,400.

Just as Kid Poker did in Event #1, Daniel Negreanu has made the final day of the latest event, the $10,200 Dealer’s Choice Event #7. With 2,785,000 chips, Canada’s all-time number one poker player Negreanu is some way clear of Philip Sternheimer (1,785,000), Adam Friedman (1,725,000) and Maxx Coleman (695,000), while 17-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth survived with just 55,000 – half a big bet – after Negreanu recorded The Poker Brat in action during the closing stages of Day 1.

The sixth event belonged to Wong, however. With players such as Jeremy Ausmus, Jason Lipiner and Felipe Ramos all selling to Event #9, the $25,300 buy-in 10-Game Championship on the PokerStake PGT Mixed Games Series staking page, there’s a lot to play for in the remaining four events.
